Materials Needed to Create a Simple Adoption Announcement

Adoption announcements for international adoptions are difficult to find. Here is an easy to make adoption announcement perfect for international adoptions.

I wanted to give other adoptive parents more options so I recently asked my sister, Chrissy Dolezal, to create a few more adoption announcements. Here is another one of her creations.

Begin by gathering materials needed to create your adoption announcement.

  • 6" x 6" piece of base color - white
  • 2" x 6" pink strip
  • 1 3/4" x 6" strip of multi-colored dot paper
  • 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" vellum
  • 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" white rectangle
  • 2 1/4 x 3 1/4" family picture
  • 4 brads
  • 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" picture of child's country in case of international adoption or another colored piece of paper
  • 3 letter squares - 2 - 3/4" x 3/4" and 1 - 1" x 1" (the largest letter is for your last name. ex. I would choose a large "C" for "Craft"

Begin Layering the Different Pieces of the Adoption Announcement

Start by gluing the polka dotted paper to the pink strip. Allow a bit of the pink to show on one long edge.

Glue on the letters. Place the largest letter, which stands for your family's last name, in the center. The other two initials are of the children's first names if adopting two children. You may choose to pick the child's three initials for the first, middle and last name, if adopting one child.

Add a Colorful Backing to the Family Picture

Next glue your family picture to the 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" pink rectangle.

Here we show a cartoon in place of a family picture.

Print up the Adoption Announcement

Using a computer program of your choice, type up the desired announcement in the center of a 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" square piece of vellum. The example shown includes a printed, decorative edging.

Example in the photo reads:

Sara Beth
and
Mark Joseph
Joined our family on
June 15, 2006

Sara's birthday is January 3, 2001]
Mark's birthday is March 15, 2003
both born in China

Proud Parents
John and Debbie
Butler

Place vellum into the printer and hit print.

If you move fast enough, you can add embossing powder onto the freshly printed vellum, shake off the excess, and use an embossing heat gun to heat the powder. You have to move fast so that the powder sticks to the wet ink from the printer. This may or may not work. Be careful not to smear the ink as it will be wet on the vellum.

Glue the Different Elements onto the Base of the Adoption Announcement

Glue the family picture on the top right of the adoption announcement.

Cut a 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" sized picture of the child's birth country, in the case of international adoption or a plain square in a complimentary color.

Glue the country below the family picture. If using a square, rotate the square and glue as a diamond.

Place the vellum over the country cut out or square shape. Attach the vellum to the adoption announcement by poking the brads through all four corners of the vellum, through the base card.

Glue the letter strip to the left side of the adoption announcement to finish the project.

Note that this adoption announcement is not standard size and will require special envelopes and additional postage for mailing.
